Spawn History

From MINR.ORG WIKI

This page goes through the history of past spawn areas and gives a list of different spawns at the end.

Spawn History[edit]

In the server's early life, TNT Spawn was used. It is inside the TNT block build in X where much of the server's first content was made, including Skytop Labyrinth and Old Level 2. To store maps, the FFA Airship was made, which itself was split into FFA maps on the airship proper and FFA+ maps in an underground temple beneath the ship. TNT Spawn was used until 2011[?] when it was replaced by Desert Spawn.

Desert Spawn was then used for much of the server's early to middle life. One of the innovations with this spawn was introducing an FAQ Quiz, which today is known as the Old FAQ Quiz. Over time, small changes were made, such as creating warps to FFA, FFA+, Hardcore, and The Museum. Desert Spawn received several holiday themes during its use: Apocalypse Spawn, Chinese New Year 2013 Spawn, Christmas Spawn, and Chinese New Year 2014 Spawn.

Around 2014, spawn was updated to Mathwiz592's Quartz Spawn. Quartz spawn received a large playable area with activities like Spleef to play. It was also cycled frequently with kaddeke's Jungle Spawn, a smaller spawn with a similar structure. These two spawns were also the first mainstay spawns to include spawn secrets, with Quartz Spawn having Albatross Park and Jungle Spawn having Jungle Gold. Previously, only the Chinese New Year spawns had spawn secrets with Jade Temple. There was also a kaddekes spawn called Atlantis Spawn in the works during early 2014, but it was never completed.

Around Saint Patrick's Day in 2016, St. Patty's Spawn, made by Coory, bstrey, and pieceofcheese, was used. While the spawn itself didn't do anything to deviate from the spawn formula, it began rumblings in staff threads about needing an overhauled spawn a short while after being phased out. This led to Spawn Competition 2016, an event which would define the server's spawns for the next three years. Minty Spawn, the competition's winning spawn, was put into place mid-2016.

All was not well with Minty Spawn behind the scenes, however, as a year after its implementation staff were discussing issues with the new player experience that were not fixed by improving spawn's aesthetics. These talks culminated in the idea that maps should be stored in spawn instead of a separate FFA Airship, which itself was reaching capacity for some map genres. Ultimately, Alphasesia's City Spawn was retrofitted to have hallways where all maps could be stored, and several changes were made to improve the new player experience. These changes include the creation of starter map boards for parkour and puzzles, an overhaul of the FAQ Quiz to its current version, and player NPCs which gave useful information about the server when clicked. City Spawn had the most spawn secrets of any spawn with 4 secret maps, and the spawn itself had a Corrupted City Spawn variant in use around the time Purple Comets 3 and 4 were run over the summer. City Spawn was also the first of two spawns to use the Casino Moneybags system.

City Spawn was used for a year and a half before Spawn Competition 2019 occurred. The goal of this competition was mainly to modernize spawn's aesthetics, so the structure of all the entries were kept the same as City Spawn. chayos' Frozen Spawn won and became server spawn for several years, receiving occasional updates and cut content to the extent of getting several secret questlines. One issue Frozen Spawn faced was increased lag over time due to the volume of data stored on signs in one place, requiring the four main map type sections to become teleports instead of seamless drop-downs. This spawn had Frozen Spawn Parkour, a custom new players sign for when they logged in for the first time, and a spawn variant with Black Water Spawn while Purple Comet V ran.

In 2023, wavelyte headed a new spawn project that ultimately became Star Spawn May 21, 2023. Star Spawn split up areas further, with 11 different areas and dropdowns to take instead of four for each of the main maptypes. Star Spawn also made FFA+ maps more prominent, requiring players to pass by them to reach the normal FFA areas. This was the first spawn to feature separate sections for less represented map types as well with droppers, searches, and co-op, and the spawn retired the Casino system which would not see a replacement until Artifacts in October 2025. This spawn was the first to get a compass plug-in system a few months after the switch. Star Spawn also features a secret map, Wave's Caves.

Star Spawn is the spawn in use today.

Trivia[edit]

  • Several times, old spawns have been brought back for brief use. One example was TNT Spawn being used during the server's 10th anniversary.
  • The TNT Spawn and Desert Spawn areas are used to house Mimic challenge signs.
  • Two spawns were updated to become maps. These are City Spawn Head Hunt and Lost in the Mail.
