General
Gameplay
This map contains 9 distinct segments: a large disorientating room containing large, winding, crystal-like structures in purple, blue and yellow; a sprawling glow in the dark maze with light seeping in at the corners; a huge chasm filled with floating lanterns; a tall white room filled with connecting portals and impossible staircases; a small white-out room containing multiple tall black pillars; a series of crazy rainbow-coloured tunnels; a sinister copper forest filled with rusting mechanical creatures; a large black and white room adorned with optical illusions, and a series of copper walkways suspended over a looming darkness. This map is centered around creating flamboyant mazes with additional themes in each room. The main goal in this very linear map is finding the path to the next room. A large amount of the rooms contain a certain degree of puzzle where the player has to work out the route to progress. It concludes with the ultimate goal of the map which is to witness the famous Hikari light show.
Aesthetics
This map uses a variety of very simple palettes that utilise light in different ways to create a series of entrancing scenes for the player. Nausea and night vision are used multiple times in the map to enhance the disorientating effects of the lights.
Challenges
This map appears in three challenges: 2021 Assortment, Maze Competition Trials 2021, and Hexa.
Trivia
- The map is based on a japanese light museum that had been abandoned after COVID-19 struck. Multiple interactable objects can be found across the map that extend the lore including certain objects in the reception and the forgotten toys in the dark maze.
- Hikari recieved 1st place in the 2021 Maze Competition as one of the 9 submissions.
- The map ends with a unique light show and credit sequence, being one of the only maps to reward the player with something other than points on their completion.
- Most of the rooms across the map were inspired by rooms found in real light museums while the portal room was inspired by a painting by famous graphic artist M.C.Escher.
- Hikari was voted as one of 2 runner-up maps for Map of the Year 2021 alongside The Gwishin by Sulldas.
